Who Are You Now? Redefining Yourself After a Major Life Change

Setbacks don’t just disrupt your plans; they often shake the very foundation of your identity. Whether it’s the loss of a job, the end of a significant relationship, or another unexpected change, it’s normal to feel untethered and question who you are. Redefining yourself after a setback can feel daunting, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to grow, rebuild, and uncover new aspects of who you are.

The Impact of Setbacks on Identity

Our sense of identity is often tied to the roles we play—parent, partner, professional. When life changes strip us of those roles or alter them significantly, it’s easy to feel like we’ve lost a piece of ourselves. However, identity isn’t static. It’s fluid and ever-evolving. By consciously redefining who you are, you take back control of your story.

3 Steps to Redefine Yourself

  1. Reflect on Your Core Values:
Setbacks may change your circumstances, but they don’t have to change your values. Reflect on what matters most to you. Is it connection, growth, integrity, or service? Anchoring yourself to your values helps you rebuild with clarity and purpose.

  2. Revisit Your Strengths:
Setbacks don’t erase your skills, talents, and unique qualities. Make a list of your strengths and reflect on how they’ve helped you navigate challenges in the past. These are the building blocks of your new identity.

  3. Write Your New Narrative:
Use journaling to explore how this setback fits into the larger story of your life. What lessons are you learning? How can this experience shape the person you want to become? Writing your narrative empowers you to turn pain into purpose.

A Personal Story of Redefinition

One of my clients, a man in his 40s, lost his job after a long struggle with alcohol. At first, he felt like he’d lost everything—his livelihood, his reputation, and his sense of self-worth. Through coaching and his own determination, he began to see his setback as an opportunity for change. He worked to overcome his addiction and reconnected with his strengths as a leader and communicator. Over time, he rebuilt his career, this time in a field that allowed him to mentor others facing similar struggles. His journey showed him that setbacks don’t define you—your response does.

Your Challenge for Today

Take 15 minutes to journal about your core values and strengths. Ask yourself: “What do I stand for? What am I naturally good at?” These insights will help you start building a clearer picture of who you are becoming.
